Cabin History

What We Know

Our cabin's first signatures on the walls are dated to 1897, so our best guess is that's when it was constructed. During that time, Pine Grove was simply a stop on the Narrow Gauge Railroad, and the swanky resorts hadn't quite established themselves here yet. The first residents were likely railroad workers or seasonal ice haulers.

The original footprint of the cabin is the single room with the wood burning stove. The windows at the front of the house showcase the glass making craftmanship of the time, with its distorted view of the other side.

As was customary of the time, there is an outhouse that was original to the construction on the north western side up the hill. It's completely defunct right now, but you can still observe what it would have been like on a chilly morning to run outside and take care of business. The outhouse, believe it or not, was in active use until the 1990s!

The addition of the enclosed back porch, living room, and bedroom happened around 1940-1950. While this is 50 years after original construction, by no means can it be considered a modern upgrade. The windows are original to the time, and as you can see, they are single pane at best.

The cabin did not have running water built into it until the 1990s, when a cistern and single pipe were installed on the property. The cistern is located on the southern side of the building, and you can see where we vent it and fill with water via the pipes that stick up out of the ground. Please try not to step on and around the pipes too much!

The cabin has gone through generations of upgrades and feature addition at this point. Most recently, the roof has been upgraded to a metal roof, and the plumbing has all been redone from scratch, but it's amazing to see where history has been left to the imagination. Please observe the signatures on the wall in the main room where you can see enthusiastic visitors and residents from 1897 all the way through the 2000's. But - PLEASE do not add your own signature to the wall. We really want to preserve the whispers of the past in place.
